Today we announce the retirement of one of our most accomplished and respected officials, Rhian Edwards, who steps away from performance and international umpiring after a distinguished career. Rhian, an International Umpire Awardee (IUA), has decided to conclude her commitment to the international stage following another successful year marked by major appointments.
Rhian’s journey as a top-tier umpire has seen her travel the globe, consistently demonstrating the highest standards of officiating and sportsmanship. Her impressive seven season journey at Netball Super League, umpiring the finals at the Fast5 Series and umpiring the first final of the Youth Commonwealth Games, are amongst Rhian highlights and top umpiring moment. To sign off her illustrious umpiring carer, Rhian’s 2024/25 season, included high-profile duties at three significant events:
- The demanding Netball Super League (NSL) competition in the UK.
- The prestigious Netball World Youth Cup held in Gibraltar.
- The thrilling Scotland vs New Zealand Series.
Following these major accomplishments, Rhian felt the time was right to conclude this chapter of her life.
“I picked up a whistle to support my club and rapidly progressed from age group support to the Wales team and once I got onto the Europe Netball radar, the support from mentors and assessors accelerate my journey”, said Rhian. “Stepping onto the sidelines in the England Netball umpiring pathway gave me the opportunity to umpire in Prem and NPL, which helped me into a seven-season NSL career, reaching the 3rd/4th place playoff in 2024.
“I am incredibly proud of everything I have achieved, and the opportunities Netball has given me. Netball is your passport to the world, but the best bit are the friendships you make on the way.”
Rhian has been a consistent flagbearer for Welsh officiating, earning the respect of players, coaches, and fellow officials worldwide. Her dedication to continuous professional development and her calm, authoritative presence on court made her a role model for aspiring umpires.
Rhian has been an absolute asset to Welsh netball and the global umpiring fraternity. Her IUA status is a testament to her dedication and the quality of her officiating. While we are sad to see her step away from the international arena, we celebrate her remarkable career and the legacy she leaves behind.
While Rhian is retiring from the performance pathway, her contribution to the sport will undoubtedly continue. Umpires like Rhian are crucial in mentoring the next generation of Welsh officials, ensuring a pipeline of talent that can uphold the integrity of the game.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Rhian for her unwavering commitment, professionalism, and the outstanding way she has represented Wales on the global stage. We wish her all the very best in her future endeavours.
Diolch yn fawr, Rhian!
