Clare Jones makes Wales Netball squad debut

Netball player Clare Jones from Swansea has received her
first cap to represent Wales as Wing Defence during their third test match
against South Africa.

The twenty-four year old took the court in their last
quarter of their final test match of three in Durban.

Jones feels honoured to have received her first cap at such
an important test match series.

“I am speechless,” says Jones. “It was truly a unique honour
and privilege to not only wear my country’s dress but to be able to take the
court with the girls who have all trained so incredibly hard.

“I was proud to be given the opportunity to perform for the
team, my family, friends and my country.

“A big thank you to management, my team and my family for
their support.”

Jones, a Mental Health Strategy Officer based in Swansea,
was talent spotted by Trish Wilcox whilst trailing for the Celtic Dragons.

Jones is a former pupil of Bishop Vaughan Catholic School
and student and Gorseinion College.  Jones later studied BSc in psychology
and an MSc in Psychological Research Methods at Exeter University.

Wales, ranked eighth in the world, met fifth ranked South
Africa from 17 – 19 June.  Despite being defeated by South Africa in all
three matches, the Welsh fought hard and certainly tested the South African
side.

The senior squad have performed well and gave it their all,
according to Head Coach Trish Wilcox.

“This was a fantastic experience for the players,” says
Wilcox, born in Gorseinion, Swansea.

“I am extremely proud of the progress we have made
throughout this three test series.

“We thank Netball South Africa for being wonderful hosts and
for this fantastic opportunity.”
