Wales Maintain Position in World’s Top 10

The International Netball Federation has today released the latest INF World Rankings table and Welsh Netball is pleased to share the news that Wales has maintained its position in 9th place.

Over the last 12 months, Wales has stormed back into the world’s top 10 after going seven test matches without loss, with several wins over higher ranked opposition and a silver medal at the 2019 Netball Europe Open Championship.

The global Coronavirus outbreak has put a stop to netball activity in the Netball Europe region but the squad has been training regularly together via Zoom and are focused on being in peak condition for an eventual return to court. Once netball is able to resume, the team will have their sights set on securing qualification for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by maintaining a position inside the world’s Top 12 netball nations.

In terms of how the rankings are determined, matches played before July 2017 are no longer included in determining the INF World Rankings. Matches played between 1st July 2017 and 30th June 2019 now have a 50% weighting, while those played from 1st July 2019 onwards have a full weighting (100%).

The latest rankings see Australia retain their position as the top team in the world, with New Zealand in second place. England overtake Jamaica to claim third place. Other changes in the top 20 see Malawi (who Wales defeated in the 2019 Summer Tests) move up one place to 6th, Uganda move down to 7th while Zimbabwe move up a place to 12th and Barbados down to 13th.

More changes see Antigua and Barbuda move up to 31st place, the Cayman Islands move up two places to 26th while Botswana move down to 27th and Ireland move down to 28th. The largest movement within the rankings is Namibia who move from 30th place to 23rd and Lesotho join in the rankings in 40th place.
