It is with great sadness that Welsh Netball shares the news that former President, Penny Nicholas (pictured on the left) has passed away.
Penny was a very active and influential member of Welsh Netball, spending decades at the heart of the National Governing Body and representing her country as a delegate at a number of international tours and competitions. Penny held numerous roles during her distinguished career with Welsh Netball, serving as Treasurer (1966-1969), General Secretary (1969-1980), Chair (1980-1983) and President from 1983 until her retirement.
Penny attended both Wales’ tour to Canada in 1972 (where she served as Team Manager) and the Netball World Championship in 1979 in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. In 1982 Penny was part of the team that organised Welsh Netball into a limited company. She also played a big part in organisation of the IFNA Tournament held in Cardiff.
Outside of netball, Penny worked for the schools’ inspectorate in Wales, Estyn, as an inspector, where she was a specialist in PE and school sport before her retirement.
Welsh Netball would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Penny and we are eternally grateful for all that Penny did for both the National Governing Body and the sport as a whole.
Funeral arrangements are still to be announced and will be added here in due course.
