Neath Port Talbot Regional Academy Spotlight

In 2024, the spotlight shines brightly on the dedication and talent emanating from the Regional Academies across Wales. These academies, nestled in communities and institutions, serve as the nurturing grounds for the future stars of Welsh netball in the performance environment. Among them, the Neath Port Talbot College (NPTC) Regional Academy stands tall, a beacon of excellence in skill development and athletic growth.

With eight Regional Academies spanning the Welsh landscape, boasting over 400 budding athletes in the U15 and U17 age categories, the commitment to elevating the profile of these centres is unwavering. These academies form the foundation of the Performance Pathway, guiding young netballers towards their dreams of international representation.

Located within the esteemed Llandarcy Academy of Sport, Llandarcy Park, the Neath Port Talbot College Regional Academy pulses with energy every Sunday. Under the stewardship of Head Coach Sharon Walters, the Regional Academy radiates positivity, hard work, and camaraderie.

Coach Walters encapsulates the ethos of the academy, stating, “A positive, fun, hard-working environment, with a large amount of skill learning, memories that will stay with them forever, and friendships made for life.” It’s not just about netball; it’s about fostering an environment where athletes grow not just as players, but as individuals.

Each month brings a new focus, a new opportunity for growth. In January, the Neath Port Talbot College Regional Academy delved into Defensive Principles. Athletes immersed themselves in understanding and effectively applying the stages of defence, honing their skills and tactical acumen under the guidance of expert coaches.

Behind the success of the Neath Port Talbot College Regional Academy stands the formidable institution of NPTC Group of Colleges. Covering 30% of Wales’s landmass, NPTC is a stalwart in further education, offering a diverse range of full- and part-time courses to over 270,000 residents.

The journey of the Neath Port Talbot College Regional Academy is one of dedication, passion, and community. As it continues to mould the netball stars of tomorrow, it welcomes all who share the love for the game to join its ranks.
