October Organisation of the Month

Our Organisation of the Month for October is Bridgend Hawks, a new netball club that has made an incredibly positive and powerful impact on its community in a remarkably short time. Focused on kindness, confidence, and connection, their deep-rooted values have created a thriving club culture where every member feels valued.

What started as a simple idea among a few friends to get back on the court has rapidly grown into a vibrant community. The Hawks now welcome women of all ages and abilities, offering them a chance to play netball, build connections, and feel part of something truly special. From their very first session to becoming a recognised league club, their journey has been shaped by pure passion and incredible teamwork.

At the heart of this success are co-founders Sophie and Sam, who volunteer countless hours to run the club. They manage everything from logistics and welfare to coaching and cheering courtside. Their energy, organisation, and commitment have built the rock-solid foundation of what the Hawks stand for.

“Starting this club has been a massive beacon of hope for all the ladies at Bridgend Hawks. Many thought retirement was on the cards and others were brand new to netball. Coaching at Bridgend Hawks has taken over my life in the most positive way possible and I am a proud Hawk.” – Sam, Co-founder of Hawks

“Bridgend Hawks began with two people who had the idea to create a supportive and positive netball environment and now we have 34 members. I am so proud of the club that we have created. It is a pleasure to work with every single member of the club. Bridgend Hawks is not only a netball club but a family.”  – Sophie, Co- founder of Hawks

Their leadership team is formidable. Lauren and Caitlin, who serve as Vice-Chair’s, are key figures who quietly ensure everything runs smoothly. They manage finances, design new kit, organise annual charity fundraisers, and Lauren also captains a team—their impact is felt by every member. This core team is supported by countless volunteers who handle administration, fundraising, and socials, all while juggling busy lives outside the club.

A key driver of the Hawks’ success is how deeply ingrained their culture is, making the club accessible and welcoming to all. Championing equity, diversity, and empowerment, the club actively supports mental health awareness and provides a safe, positive environment for women to reconnect with sport and build confidence. They also invest in their members by ensuring they are upskilled in First Aid and Safeguarding, further protecting and empowering their community.

“Being part of the hawks has made such a difference to me. It’s brought me out of my comfort zone and helped me get me back again after feeling like I’d lost myself a bit last year. The best team to be part of and an amazing group of girls to play and train with. When I’m training and playing, I forget everything and feel so good after it. Grateful to be part of such an amazing club.”  – Becca J – Hawks team member

To recognise the diverse contributions of their members, the club holds a confidential monthly vote for ‘Hawk of the Month.’ This simple but important practice highlights kindness, effort, and individuality, reminding the community that every member brings something different and every contribution matters.

“What I love most about the Hawks is how real it is. it’s women supporting women, finding time for themselves, and creating something positive together. It’s the best reminder of what sport can do.”  – Josie – Social Media Officer and Hawks team member

The Bridgend Hawks are about more than just netball. In their first year alone, their fundraising efforts have been extraordinary. A whopping £1,400 was raised for two incredible charities through a community netball tournament, bringing women together for a day of sport, fun, and purpose. An additional £1,690 was raised through events like a sponsored wig walk up Pen y Fan. This funding helped the club purchase tour dresses so every player could wear the same kit, removing potential barriers and promoting equality.

“As a fundraiser for our netball club, I’m constantly inspired by the passion, generosity and positivity!!! Every contribution, no matter how big or small helps our club to thrive and the players grow. We’ve not only raised £1,690 to support our own journey, but also £1,400 for charity, proving that we play with purpose. We make a real difference on and off the court. I couldn’t be prouder to play a part in that.”  – Jo – Fundraising Secretary and Hawks team member

Bridgend Hawks have made a monumental impression in their first year. By establishing a core set of values and a positive culture, they have laid a strong foundation for what is sure to remain an uplifting, fostering club for anyone who wants to join. A huge thank you to the hardworking committee for everything they are doing to provide women with a safe space to belong, switch off, and enjoy playing netball.

At the halfway point of every month, Wales Netball will announce its Organisation of the Month. An article will be displayed on our website, and a post will be shared across all our social media channels.
