Welsh Feather #6, Sybil Butler Venables née Jones, made her international debut at just 22 years old on 7 May 1949, playing in matches against England and Scotland. Representing her hometown of Cardiff, Sybil held the line in Defence with determination and pride. Sybil was also the very first Welsh Feathers Captain!
Sybil taught physical education at Lady Margaret’s School for Girls in Roath where she also coached the netball team. A key player in her netball team and pictured holding the netball is Betty Campbell who was Wales first Black Head Teacher, and who was coached by the first Welsh Feathers captain!
Sybil’s played Defence and her legacy extends beyond her time on the court, and she remained a cherished figure in Welsh netball history until her passing on 9 December 2004 in Cardiganshire North, Dyfed, Wales.
