Welsh Feather #73, Lesley Owen, achieved an extraordinary 73 caps over an impressive 15-year career with the Welsh Feathers. Lesley began her journey competing against the Home Nations—England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland—in various competitions before representing Wales on the global stage.
In 1971, Lesley travelled to Jamaica for the 3rd Netball World Cup, where she played against teams such as Trinidad, the Bahamas, New Zealand, Jamaica, and Australia. She later joined the squad for the 4th Netball World Cup in New Zealand in 1975, competing against new opponents like Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Lesley continued her international appearances in the 5th Netball World Cup, held in Trinidad & Tobago in 1979, facing teams like Jamaica, Trinidad, Australia, Barbados, and the Republic of Ireland. Her incredible journey culminated with her participation in the 6th Netball World Cup in Singapore in 1983, where she played against Malaysia for the first time.
Lesley’s career also included notable matches such as the British Isles Tournament against the Republic of Ireland on 6 March 1977, an international against Canada on 19 April 1976, and a game against Sri Lanka on 25 April 1978.
Lesley played as a Goal Attack and Goal Shooter, showcasing her exceptional scoring and offensive play skills. Hailing from Newport, Lesley was among the most travelled and versatile players in Welsh netball history. Out of her 73 games, she achieved 31 wins, 4 draws, and 38 losses, resulting in a win rate of 42.47%.
