What is Physical Literacy?
“Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.”
(International Physical Literacy Association, 2017)
About
Physical Literacy encompasses our relationship with movement and physical activity throughout our lifetime. It adopts a person-centred approach to get people engaged in physical activity, improving holistic health and wellbeing.
.
Developing a person's physical literacy is them being confident and keen to move, understanding why and how to move, and using creativity when moving, and enjoying physical activity.
.
At Wales Netball, we play a large part in our communities relationship with physical literacy; and everyone's journey is unique.
.
The relationship begins with our Netball Tots programme for 3-6 year olds (read more here) and develops through to School, Club, Social and Performance participation. Other programmes, such as Walking Netball (read more here), Seated Netball (read more here) and Back to Netball, offer other, inclusive variations of the sport. It's this varied netball participation that provides the perfect opportunity to aid the development of physical literacy.
.
.
If you are netball deliverer, or find yourself within the netball setting, you have a fantastic opportunity to enhance the physical literacy of yourself and others, to aid lifelong engagement in physical activity.
.
If you would like to learn more about how you can improve participants' knowledge, confidence, motivation, and physical competence through movement, check out our Physical Literacy Workshops!
