What is Physical Literacy?
“Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.”
(International Physical Literacy Association, 2017)
Physical Literacy encompasses our relationship with movement and physical activity throughout our lifetime. It offers alternative methods to get people engaged in physical activity, improving holistic health and wellbeing.
Being physically literate is about enjoying movement, having the self-confidence to move around freely, understanding why and how to move, and using creativity when engaging in physical activities.
At Wales Netball, we play a large part in our communities relationship with physical literacy; and everyone's journey is unique.
The relationship begins with our Netball Tots programme for 3-6 year olds (read more here) and develops right through to our Walking Netball programme for older adults or those less mobile. It's this netball participation that provides the perfect opportunity to aid the development of physical literacy.
If you a netball deliverer, or find yourself within the netball setting, you have a fantastic opportunity to enhance the physical literacy of yourself and others, to aid lifelong engagement in physical activity.
If you would like to learn more about how you can improve participants' knowledge, confidence, motivation, and physical competence through movement, check out our Physical Literacy Workshops!
What is it?
This workshop will help you develop knowledge and understanding of physical literacy, to improve netball delivery practices and ensure participants have positive experiences. The workshop will introduce the holistic approach and the importance of adopting this throughout delivery. It will also help you plan safe, purposeful and meaningful physical activities for your participants.
Who is it for?
Physical Literacy is for everyone - regardless of age, background or physical ability.
Our Physical Literacy Workshop is a great tool for those within the netball setting, to inspire and encourage people to have a more holistic view of approaching physical activity. Therefore, this course is perfect for coaches, umpires and players, to learn about how to develop competent, confident and healthy movers.
