Regional Academy Spotlight – Cardiff University

This week, our focus is on the Cardiff University Regional Academy, which has been working tirelessly on implementing highly effective Defensive Principles aiming to limit the space and opportunities available to their opponents, making it more challenging for them to score.

According to Head Coach Fiona Sheppard, the Cardiff University Regional Academy has had an impressive start to the year, having successfully retained several athletes from the previous season, in addition to welcoming many new, talented athletes to complete their 2023-2024 U15 and U17 squads. The athletes’ primary ambition is to build their skills, improve their overall fitness levels, and foster new friendships within the Regional Academy environment. As coaches, they are delighted to support and guide them throughout this journey.

“Cardiff University Regional Academy is unwavering in its commitment to maintaining a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for its athletes. We achieve this by striking a balance between targeted skill development and team drills and training games, which allow athletes to apply their newly acquired skills in a practical setting. We take immense pride in the players who represent the Cardiff University Regional Academy in Wales’ National Academy squads and the Cardiff Dragons Pathway at various age groups. We encourage all players to participate in competitive environments outside of the Regional Academy that allow them to apply and strengthen the skills they have learned in our training sessions. Leanne Bridgeman (Assistant Coach), and I are thrilled to see their athletes growing and developing, and eagerly look forward to showcasing their progress in the end-of-year Regional Academy tournament.”
