Back in the place she gained her first cap, Wales’s co-captain Suzy Drane has officially become the most capped Wales international netballer ever.
17 years after gaining her first cap for Wales, Suzy Drane captained her side alongside Nia Jones in front of a full capacity crowd to make history. Suzy made her first appearance for Wales in Sport Wales in 2005 against Jamacia in the centre position. Since then, Suzy has competed in 3 Commonwealth Games (soon to be 4), 2 World Cups and many Netball Europe Open Championships.
Before the test series against the South African Spar Proteas, Suzy was on the cusp of equalling the record set by Helen Weston of being the most capped Wales Netball athlete in history. After starting in the centre position in the first of two test matches, Suzy reached 111 caps, meaning she was level on caps with the great defender Helen Weston.
Then, finally when the #168 Wales athlete took to the court against the Spar Proteas in the second test match on Wednesday 20th July 2022, Suzy made Wales Netball history by surpassing Helen Weston as the most capped Wales netball player ever with 112 caps.
About the history maker, Vicki Sutton, CEO of Wales Netball said “Suzy is the ultimate Netballer. She works incredibly hard on and off court and never assumes her place in the squad is set in stone. Suzy always has time to have coffee with team-mates or chat to a fan”
“Suzy is a wonderful role model to so many aspiring netballers and a great example of perseverance paying off. We are incredibly lucky to have Suzy within netball in Wales and are so proud that she has reached this amazing milestone.”
Congratulations Suzy for this achievement. Everyone at Wales Netball is excited to watch you compete at the Commonwealth Games as co-captain.
112 and not out!
