The chosen squad includes a blend of established Welsh internationals, including 10 of the Commonwealth Games squad. Many of the athletes have recently been named in 2023 VNSL franchise teams, who will be performing at the highest levels. These athletes along with exciting young players who have progressed through our age group squads will create a good blend of youth and experience.
Sara Moore, Head Coach said “Selecting this group of athletes was not easy. We had a wealth of talent to choose from, and they made it really difficult for us as coaches to decide on the final group.
Following the Commonwealth Games campaign, we have had a number of athletes decide that they wish to step away from international netball, which is of course disappointing, but for me it’s also about seeing the opportunity that comes with that. We have never been reliant on one or two individuals to get the job done, it’s about the collective. I’m all for giving athletes opportunities and seeing them thrive.
We have included a number of talented young players in the group and working closely with them over these last few weeks, I’ve seen their enthusiasm for what we do, and that really excites me.
I am extremely pleased to be working with our Leadership Group again this season. Suzy, Nia, Clare and Ella have been standout leaders for Wales, and they are absolutely the right people to continue to take this group forward. I am delighted to also name Bethan Dyke as a Vice-Captain. Her experience and her personality are exactly what this team needs.
Seeing a good number of our National Academy athletes make the transition from U21 to Senior Netball is also huge, and I am excited to see what this group can do against Uganda in October, and at Europe Netball as we aim to qualify for the World Cup.”
We have an exciting year ahead with Wales facing Uganda in a two-match test series on Saturday 1st October and Sunday 2nd October, and competing in the World Cup Qualifiers in Glasgow which will hopefully see the squad travel to South Africa to compete in the Netball World Cup in 2023. The Ugandan test series is a great opportunity to further prepare for the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town. You can buy your tickets to watch the 2022/23 squad in action here.
