Wales Netball opens nominations for Members Council in landmark step for the sport

Wales Netball is today calling on its members to step forward and help shape the future of the sport, as nominations open for the newly established Members Council -a milestone moment in the organisation’s Ymladd 2030 transformation.

The Members Council was voted into existence by Wales Netball members at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 27 January 2026. It is a permanent, elected body that gives members a formal voice in how netball in Wales is governed.

Nominations are now open for:

  • Eight regional Member-Nominated Councillors
  • Player Representative Councillor, and
  • Wales Netball President

The formal elections will take place at this year’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 11 August 2026.

Sarah Boswell, Chief Executive Officer, Wales Netball, said: “Creating the Members Council is a really important moment for Wales Netball and for the future of our sport. One of the clearest messages we’ve heard from our community through our Wales wide consultation, is that people want to feel genuinely heard and connected to decision making – not just consulted after the fact.  These roles give our members a real seat at the table and an opportunity to help shape the future direction of netball in Wales. We want people from across the whole netball family to see themselves in this – players, coaches, volunteers, officials and club leaders from every part of the country. If you care about the future of our game and want to help drive it forward, I’d really encourage you to put yourself forward.”

A seat at the table

The appetite for the Members Council was reinforced by what members told Wales Netball during its national consultation. Across all regions, the same message was clear: members wanted a stronger voice, greater transparency and more meaningful involvement in decisions that affect their sport.

The council is structured to ensure representation from every corner of Wales, with eight regional seats covering Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff and Vale, Glamorgan Valleys, North West, North East, Powys, South East and West Wales. Alongside these regional Member-Nominated Councillors, the Members Council will also include the elected Wales Netball President and Vice President, a nominated Player Representative Councillor, the Forward Futures Collective Chair and a non-voting Wales Netball executive.

Members elected to the Council will hold a formal governance role within Wales Netball -attending meetings, representing their communities and feeding member priorities directly into national decision-making.

Helen Williams, Chair, Wales Netball, said: “The Members Council embodies our vision of being truly community powered, and it is wonderful to see it become a reality. Netball in Wales is built on the dedication of thousands of players, coaches, umpires and volunteers who give so much to this sport and it is right that their voices are heard at the heart of how we govern it. I would warmly encourage any member who cares about the future of netball in Wales to consider standing. You do not need a background in governance – you need commitment to your region and a passion for the game. We want this council to reflect the diversity and energy of our whole community, and that starts with who puts themselves forward.”

The President of Wales Netball is an elected position that serves as an ambassador for the sport across Wales, championing the values of the game and representing the membership at the highest level of the organisation’s governance, including leading the Members Council. Each cycle, Wales Netball seeks a new President and is looking for a passionate advocate for netball who is committed to supporting the growth and development of the sport and can bring leadership, integrity and a strong member focus to the role.

Jean Foster, interim President, Wales Netball, said: “It has been an absolute honour to serve as interim President and to represent this incredible sport and its community. The Members Council marks a new and exciting chapter for Wales Netball, and the role of Wales Netball President will be central to making it a success. I would encourage anyone who has a passion for netball and a desire to make a real difference to consider putting themselves forward. I wish all applicants the very best of luck.”
