Wales Netball Prepares for the Inaugural Celtic Cup in Glasgow

Event Overview

Mark your calendars for a thrilling new netball event coming this November! Running from 7th to 10th November 2024, teams from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Zimbabwe will compete in the inaugural Celtic Cup, showcasing international netball at its finest.

As the tournament approaches, the Welsh Feathers are gearing up to take the court in what promises to be an exciting and highly competitive event. Hosted at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, this new competition provides a fantastic opportunity for both seasoned fans and novices to experience elite-level netball. The tournament will follow a round-robin format from Thursday to Saturday, culminating in the finals on Sunday, November 10th.

Under the leadership of head coach Emily Handyside, the Welsh Feathers are entering this tournament with a renewed sense of purpose as they begin their preparations for the next World Cup cycle. With a blend of seasoned players and fresh talent, the squad is poised to build on the solid foundation they’ve established, and the Celtic Cup offers the perfect platform to test their abilities against top-level opponents and further refine their strategy.

Vicki Sutton, CEO of Wales Netball, highlighted the significance of this tournament, stating, “The Celtic Cup presents a unique opportunity for our Welsh Feathers to compete against different styles of international netball on UK soil. The collaborative effort between the Celtic nations has made this event a reality, and we are thrilled to be part of it.”

The Celtic Cup was created through the collaboration of Netball Northern Ireland, Netball Scotland, and Wales Netball to provide a competitive tournament for athletes and spectators outside of the World Cup and Commonwealth Games. The hope is that the competition will grow in the coming years to include even more invitational teams.
