Wales Netballer #192 Kyra Jones to step away from International Netball

Kyra Jones has announced that she will be stepping away from international netball after representing Wales since 2012.

The Wales international made her debut against Scotland in the Netball Europe Open Championships 10 years ago and since then has frequently played in test matches (including two Commonwealth Games and a World Cup) to accumulate 67 appearances in the red dress. During her time representing Wales, Kyra celebrated her 50th Cap on 20th January 2018 against Northern Ireland in Perth.

Kyra has been an integral part of the Wales Netball Senior Squad and was part of the squad that had a huge win over Netball Northern Ireland (to make it 7 matches undefeated for Wales) in the Netball Europe Open Championships. In this competition back in 2019, Kyra won the Netball Europe Player of the Tournament. As well as being involved in the Wales Senior Squad, Kyra previously has played for Celtic Dragons in the Vitality Netball Superleague and was a part of the Dragons Pathway as an Age Group Coach.

Not only has Kyra been a massive asset for Wales on the court, she has been inspiring off the court too. Throughout her time playing for Wales, Kyra has been involved with keeping the community active by producing HIIT videos. When the World halted due to Covid-19, Kyra continued to keep Wales active by being heavily involved in Netball Nights In. Even during the lockdown, Kyra filmed fitness videos for people to remain active and have a healthy body and mind in difficult times.

Talking about Kyra, Vicki Sutton (Wales Netball CEO) said “On behalf of all of us here at Wales Netball, thank you for your commitment to Wales over the past 10 years. You have sacrificed an awful lot to play for Wales and we are forever grateful for that. You always set such high standards by the intensity you trained at and although you are a fierce netballer, you also have done a fantastic job of nurturing young players coming into the squad. Although it is a small gesture, we hope that this article will go some way to honouring your wonderful career.”

Kyra has been massively influential and inspirational throughout her 10 years with Wales Netball. Everyone at Wales Netball would like to thank Kyra for her contributions to the National Governing Body on and off the court and would like to wish Kyra the best of luck in her next chapter.
