Wales Set to host South Africa SPAR Proteas in July

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting a series of matches against South Africa this July. We will face the SPAR Proteas for 2 matches on Tuesday 19th July and Wednesday 20th July 2022.

The last time the Wales Senior Squad faced the SPAR Proteas in a test match was back in 2019 in the Wendy White Test Series. The sides faced each other twice and although South Africa took the wins in both matches, 84-32 and 79-44, Wales closed the gap in the score line by 17 goals. Last year, Wales and the SPAR Proteas flew to Ireland to play each other in a training match, with a well fought first half of the match from both sides.

As we draw closer to the Commonwealth Games, this series provides pivotal experience and exposure against one of the best teams in the world. Talking about the matches, Head Coach Sara Moore had this to say “We are thrilled to be able to welcome the South African Spar Proteas to Wales. They were absolutely the team we needed to target as part of our Commonwealth Games preparations, and I’m pleased we are able to make the test matches happen. It’s essential that Wales play teams in the top 5 as regularly as possible, because in order to improve, you have to test yourself regularly against the best in the world.”

“We played the SPAR Proteas in a training match in October, and we were pretty pleased with how we went as a group. The first half in particular was closely contested by both teams, and we played great netball.”

“We are both in the same group at Commonwealth Games, and from that perspective we will be using these test matches as part of our final preparations for Birmingham. I’m sure the SPAR Proteas will be targeting medals at Commonwealth Games, based on their recent performances, and of course we have our own goals for the competition, so playing them prior to entering the village will stand us in good stead.”

Wales will face South Africa on Tuesday 19th July at 7.00pm and Wednesday 20th July at 7.00pm at Sport Wales National Centre.
