Wales Squad Announced for Silver Ferns Clash. Cyhoeddi Carfan Cymru Cyn Gemau Prawf Seland Newydd.

Wales have named their squad to face New Zealand’s Silver Ferns at the Swansea University International Test Series on the 7th and 8th of February 2017.

Led by Captain Suzy Drane, the team will represent their country at the 3,000 capacity Ice Arena Wales, in front a record-breaking crowd for any netball game held here Wales.

The squad sees some returning experienced players as well as some new recruits.  Wales Under 21 squad’s Chloe James joins the line-up for the first time.  Chloe will be hoping to wear the red dress for her debut on court against the world number 2 netball giants.

The Swansea University International Test Series marks 20 years since the Silver Ferns last played the host nation on Welsh soil.  

“The excitement has been building for this test series since trials last weekend,” says Wales Head Coach Trish Wilcox.

“We have had a really productive camp this weekend and all players have pushed for a place in the final twelve.”

The Wales squad selected for The Swansea University International Test Series is as follows;

Sara Bell, Fern Davies, Suzy Drane (Captain), Bethan Dyke, Chloe James, Kyra Jones, Nia Jones, Lateisha Kidner, Chelsea Lewis, Kelly Morgan (Vice-Captain), Georgia Rowe, and Amanda Varey.

The final squad of twelve are part of the Wales long squad who are in preparation for the game’s next world stage at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Goal Coast, Australia.   With just fourteen months until the Games, the clash against the Silver Ferns is a fantastic opportunity to start setting strategic goals in preparation for the Wales campaign, according to Head Coach Trish Wilcox:

“The players are relishing the opportunity to benchmark themselves against world class players, whilst playing in front of the largest home crowd to watch a game of netball in Wales.”

Nicola Phillips, Team Wales Chef de Mission for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games said: “We’d like to extend huge congratulations to the ladies who have been chosen to play for Wales against New Zealand. This is an extremely exciting announcement given that the squad selected for the test series will also be in the long squad for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The matches against the Silver Ferns are a very important milestone on Welsh Netball’s road to the Gold Coast and we wish the team all the very best this week.”

Mae Cymru wedi cyhoeddi’r garfan fydd yn gwynebu tîm pêl rwyd cenedlaethol Seland Newydd yng Ngemau Prawf Rhynwladol Prifysgol Abertawe, ar y 7fed a’r 8fed o Chwefror eleni.

O dan arweiniad Capten y tîm, Suzy Drane, bydd y chwaraewyr yn cynrychioli eu gwlad yng Nghanolfan Iâ Cymru, o flaen y dorf mwyaf i  Gymru erioed berfformio o’u blaen mewn gêm cartref yn hanes y gêm.

Mae Gemau Prawf Rhyngwladol Prifysgol Abertawe yn nodi ugain mlynedd ers i dîm Seland Newydd chwarae yn erbyn Cymru yng Nghymru.

“Mae’r cyffro am y gemau prawf yma wedi bod yn adeiladu ers y treialon penwythnos dwethaf,” medd Hyfforddwr Cymru, Trish Wilcox.

“Cawsom ymarferion cynhyrchiol yng ngwersyll Cymru penwythnos yma ac mae pob chwaraewr wedi gweithio’n galed i ennill lle yn y deuddeg terfynol.”

Y garfan fydd yn gwynebu Seland Newydd ydy;

Bydd y garfan terfynol o ddeuddeg chwaraewr yn rhan o garfan hir Cymru, sydd yn paratoi at lwyfan rhyngwladol nesaf y gamp – sef Gemau’r Gymanwlad 2018, yn Gold Coast, Awstralia.  Dim ond 14 mis sydd ar ôl tan y Gemau hynny, ac yn ôl Trish Wilcox – prif hyfforddwr Cymru, mae’r gemau yn erbyn y Silver Ferns yn gyfle gwych i gychwyn strategaeth ar gyfer ymgyrch fawr Cymru:

“Mae’r chwaraewyr wedi mwynhau’r cyfle i meincnodi eu hunain yn erbyn chwaraewyr gorau’r byd, tra’n chwarae o flaen y dorf mwyaf i wylio gêm cartref yng Nghymru.”

Meddai Nicola Phillips, Chef de Mission Tîm Cymru ar gyfer Gemau’r Gymanwlad 2018: “Llongyfarchiadau mawr i’r merched sydd wedi cael eu dewis i chwarae dros Gymru yn erbyn Seland Newydd. Mae hwn yn gyhoeddiad hynod gyffrous gan y bydd y sgwad sydd wedi ei ddewis i chwarae’r gemau yr wythnos hon hefyd yn ffurfio rhan o garfan hir Cymru ar gyfer Gemau’r Gymanwlad 2018. Mae’r gemau yn erbyn y Silver Ferns yn garreg filltir bwysig i Bêl-rwyd Cymru ar eu taith i’r Arfordir Aur a dymunwn bob lwc i’r tîm dros y dyddiau nesaf.”
