Wales U21s Have Great Success Performance Competition

A squad of 15 athletes, 12 from the current Wales U21 long squad, and 3 age eligible from the current Senior Squad, travelled to Sheffield to participate in a Performance Competition Camp hosted by England Netball.

The week was designed to provide valuable competition exposure for our young athletes following 18 months of no international competition (including the cancellation of WYC). It included 4 behind closed doors games against England U21s, England U19s and Scotland.

The group came together at short notice, but it was clear from the outset that they had all engaged with, and brought into the objectives and values of this competition.

With clear KPIs and focus points set, all players took to court across the 4 games. The quality of netball demonstrated, and the growth from quarter to quarter from all the squad was evident.

All 4 games were well contested and provided different opportunities for the group to feel and experience. It was pleasing to see the team putting out a fearless and determined performance versus England U21s on day 2, with the ability to stick to task under pressure against a talented side.

In addition to the games the competition provided valuable off court experience and exposure of being away from home, travel, performance KPIs, running to a schedule, one to one meetings, team meetings, unit briefings and recovery work and all elements of being away in competition for this young squad.

Head Coach Nikki Lloyd Said “With Netball Europe 2021 on the horizon, this provided a platform for learning and development for players and management. I am very excited about the potential and capacity we have within the U21 age band, and this ensures a bright future for Wales National
