The Welsh Feathers squad is riding a wave of momentum as they prepare to defend their title at the upcoming Celtic Cup, having just secured a comprehensive 2-0 Home Test Series victory over Zimbabwe.
The Feathers, who are the reigning Celtic Cup champions, showed both dominant firepower and resilience across the weekend series, signalling their readiness for an expanded and highly competitive tournament in Glasgow.
Double Victory Over Zimbabwe
Wales claimed victory in both thrilling Test matches against the Zimbabwe Gems at the House of Sport in Cardiff, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November, 2025.
- Game One: The Feathers opened the series with a commanding performance, winning 66 – 39. The match was characterised by high accuracy in the shooting circle and disciplined defence across the court. Outstanding performance from all, especially Leah Middleton who was awarded Player of the Match.
- Game Two: The second encounter proved a closer contest, with Zimbabwe pushing the home side. However, the Feathers held firm to clinch the series sweep with a tight 50 – 44 win, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure. This match saw in Welsh Feather #201, Georgia Rowe’s 75th cap in the squad; Georgia had an incredible match for her 75th match and was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match.
The series served as the perfect high-intensity preparation for the challenge ahead.
Expanded Celtic Cup Challenge Awaits
The Welsh Feathers now travel to Scotland where they will face five teams in a bid to retain the Celtic Cup. This year’s tournament has been expanded to a six-nation event, promising a greater level of competition for the home nations.
The Feathers will take on their fellow Celtic nations—Scotland and Northern Ireland—alongside a trio of strong African guest nations: Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Namibia.
Speaking after the Test Series victory, Emily Handyside (Head Coach), praised the squad’s performance: “To secure two solid wins against a tough team like Zimbabwe is exactly the platform we needed. The squad has shown great depth and resolve, especially in the second, tighter match. Learnings to take to Glasgow as we face nations higher up the World Rankings. The Celtic Cup is now a bigger challenge with three strong African sides joining the battle, but as reigning champions, we are excited to showcase our strength and defend our title.”
The Celtic Cup begins this week, with the Feathers set to open their campaign against a familiar rival. All eyes will be on the Welsh side to see if they can repeat their heroics and take home the cup once more.
