Welsh Netball Announces Wales’ U21 Squad for World Cup.

Welsh Netball is delighted to announce the under 21 squad selected to represent Wales at the Netball World Youth Cup and the Under 21 Netball Europe Youth Championship.

Congratulations to the following athletes who will head to Gaborone, Botswana for the Netball World Youth Cup in July 2017:

Rebecca Baker, Fern Davies, Izzy Dunsford, Chloe Dyke, Celyn Emanuel, Lydia Hitchings, Chloe James, Bethan Johnson, Sarah Llewelyn, Megan Powell, Leila Thomas, Miquie Walker-Jones.

Non-travelling reserves: Georgia Jenkins, Lowri Jenkins, Eleri Michael.

After qualifying for the World Cup in October 2016, the Wales under 21 long squad have been preparing for the international event which occurs every four years.

Wales’ under 21 Head Coach Natalie Peperell says she is optimistic for her squad’s success:

“The girls have been working really hard in camp and we have developed a competitive edge, where they are consistently challenging each other in and out of camp.

“There are some players who are well seasoned playing Superleague each week, and others for whom this will be their first international competition which I think is a winning combination to have in a team, and strength in terms of development.”

Wales have been drawn into Pool D, and will face England, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, and Grenada.  In preparation for their upcoming world stage, the selected squad will also compete in the annual Netball Europe competition held in Aberdeen on 11-14th of May 2017.  They face England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland’s U21 teams once more, before taking on teams from across the world.

“We have a pretty strong pool in Botswana but are more than ready to take on the challenge and hopefully facing the England select team in Netball Europe will give us some vital experience when we face them again in the pool stages of NWYC,” says Head Coach Peperell.

“Ultimately, in each of these competitions we will be focusing on our own process, and targets for our own performances and hopefully by achieving these it will result in some good wins.”

Head Coach Natalie Peperell will lead a strong Management Team including Assistant Coach Jamllia Abbott, Team Manager Lavinia Baker, Physiotherapist Lucy Baross, and Lucy Wilde as Performance Analyst from Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Meddai Hyfforddwraig y garfan Natalie Peperell ei bod hi’n optimistaidd am yr her sydd o’i blaenau ym Motswana:

“Mae’r merched wedi bod yn gweithio’n galed yn ystod eu hyfforddiant ac wedi datblygu chwant cystadleuol.  Maent yn herio’i gilydd yn reolaidd tu fewn a thu allan i’r sesiwn hyfforddi.

“Mae rhai o’r chwaraewyr wedi arfer chwarae ar y lefel uchaf yn ystod yr Uwchgynghrair gyda’r Dreigiau Celtaidd; Ac i rhai dyma’r tro cyntaf y byddant yn cymryd rhan mewn cystadleuaeth rhyngwladol.  Teimlaf fod hyn yn gyfuniad gwych ar gyfer ein tîm, ac yn gryfder i fedru datblygu.”
